LAST WEEK
Res Ranger Dave Norris
gave us an update on the current happenings at the Res. The Res is a youth and
nature preserve that was founded in 1920 as part of the Boy Scout Reservation.
Today it is a non- profit organization called The Reservation of the Res
Inc. Dave feels that they have turned a corner financially with the
establishment of an endowment thru the Community Foundation of St. Joseph
County called the “Preservation of the Res Fund”. This fund will assist
in the future maintenance and operation of the Res. Dave talked quite a
bit about the Capital Avenue Road Project and the impact it will have on the
Res. One of the impacts will be the entrance to the Res will be
relocated to the east of the Res. Dave handed out maps showing the
approximate location of the new road. Access will be made by taking
Kline Avenue south of Lincolnway to Seventh Street. You turn right onto
Seventh Street and this will curve to the north and when you reach the
railroad tracks you will turn left and follow the road until you come to the
new Res entrance. This will probably not happen until at least
2010. He also discussed the possible land acquisition of 22 acres south
of the current Res site. This will possibly be a wetlands area in the
future. There are some legal hurdles to go through, but this may also be
an addition to the current Res. This is a small sampling of what was
covered and as always Dave gave a very interesting program.
DID
YOU KNOW?
That July 14th is also Bastille Day and is a national holiday in
France. This celebrates the storming of the Bastille and this was seen as a
symbol of the uprising of the modern French nation.
