Indiana
Indiana Public Opinion and the World War, 1914 - 1917. By Cedric C. Cummins. Indiana Historical Bureau. 1945. 292 pages. Hardcover
Because of their location, population and resources, the Middle Western sates have generally held the balance of power among the different sections of the nation. When President Wilson began his preparedness drive in the winter of 1915-1916, he journeyed to the Middle West to recruit strength for his measure by joining the support of those states with that of the East. A last-minute fight to keep the United States out of war was led by important citizens of these states. It was lost when it was evident that they no longer represented the dominant sentiment of their section. This book traces the changing attitudes of the "average" group, the Indiana citizens, as they traveled the road to war.
