The Pullman Strike. By Rev. William H. Carwardine, Pastor of the First M. E. Church, Pullman, Ill. Charles H. Kerr and Co. 1973 reprint of 1894 4th edition. 126 pages. Hardcover.
Cawardine had already been living for three years in Pullman when the strike began on May 11, 1894. Although he did not condone the strike, he well knew the living and working conditions which the strikers were enduring daily and he felt that the strikers were justified in their actions. He apparently began taking notes during the early days of the strike and within four weeks after it had ended, he had prepared a detailed account that quickly went through several printings. Because of his actions, he was exiled from Pullman in September, 1894.
