Clyde, Robert. From Rebel to Hero. The Image of the Highlander, 1745 - 1830. Tuckwell Press. 1998. 201 pages. Hardcover.
This book examines the transformation in attitude towards Scotland after 1745, beginning with a study of anti-Jacobite propaganda and the Whig agenda to for solving the "Highland Problem". The British government attempted to remodel the Highlands after the Lowland fashion, converting the Scottish from rebellions "barbarians' into loyal Presbyterian, English-speaking British subjects, dismantling clanship and the Gaelic language and imposing cultural and economic values from outside. Once the system had been imposed upon them, and the clans were dismantled, writers such as Sir Walter Scott and Robert Burns slowly turned to these times into romantic adventures. Once feared as barbarians, by the turn of the nineteenth century they had become loyal soldiers to the British Crown andwere considered the heroes of Waterloo.
