Although Finland had been part of the Swedish kingdom since the twelfth century, Finns and Swedes were of different ethnic backgrounds. However, Finns were considered to be "native Swedes" and could live anywhere within Sweden. Discusses the role of merchants in undertaking enterprises to the New World, and the fact that there is no clear-cut determination of how many colonists in the Swedish colony along the Delaware were really Swedish or Finns.
