During a ten -year period, Danziger interviewed hundreds of Indians about their past and their needs and aspirations for the future, their adjustments to urban life, finding a good job, quality medical care, and maintaining their heritage.

The 1842 Cherokee Claims were filed by the individual claimant seeking compensation for loss of property that was not included in the property valuations before removal. The claimant and the witness to his claim gave their testimony before the special clerks on claims of each district. The witnesses are usually neighbors in the old Nation or can be related to the claimant. Most claims will indicate the individuals place of residence in the east before he was removed, name of the head of the detachment of emigration, and where he resided in the Cherokee nation west in 1842. The volumes cover books 1 and 2 of the 5 bound volumes. At the time of this compilation, book 3 was not available for compilation and books 4 and 5 had not yet been published in book form by the compiler. The originals of all of the claims are at the Tennessee State Library and Archives in Nashville, Tennessee.

The original records were written in seven bound volumes. However, volume 7 is missing. The printed volume 1 covers materials in the bound volume 1 and part of volume 2. The second printed volume covers the remainder of the original book 2 as well as all of book 3 and part of book 4. At the time of the publishing of these two books, the remaining volumes had not yet been transcribed. The originals of all of the claims are at the Tennessee State Library and Archives in Nashville, Tennessee.

1851 Cherokee Old Settlers Annuity Roll. Transcribed by Marybelle W. Chase. 1993. 132 pages. Softcover.
This work is an abstract of the 1851 Cherokee Old Settlers Annuity Roll which is in Record Group 75 of the National Archives. After the removal time of 1838 - 1839, a treaty was entered into with the United States government for the settlement of claims against the goverment for land lost in the east. The Old Settler Cherokees in order to be paid were required to make a census of the people entitled to payment. In an 1851 council, the Old Settlers decided to "take all that are now living, including the latest births and rejecting the dead". The information includes names of white parents, a list of minors and orphan children, listing of individuals not present at the time of payment, etc.

This index was transcribed from rolls of Bureau of Indiana Affairs microfilm No. T-985. It corresponds to the names found in the census roll of persons eligible for payment. Entries are arranged by agency pay number. It is in two parts, each arranged alphabetically by either surname or Indian name. The first part lists the names of those persons who were alive at the time of payment. The second part lists the name of those who were deceased and whose heirs were paid.

Smith was a former Ottawa Indian trader who moved to the St. Joseph Country (i.e. the South Bend, Indiana - Niles, Michigan area) around 1826. He later served as a lighthouse keeper in Michigan. Smith mentions several incidents involving McCoy and his assistant and their treatment of the Potawatomi living at the mission. Smith began writing this pamphlet just as McCoy was beginning to remove his mission to Kansas. Whether or not the incidents are true is not known, but Smith was a well respected citizen.
