Although Madison was originally considered to be the leading city of Indiana, time and events slowly changed the town into a sleepy little village. However, the lack of industrial and commercial growth saved its grand buildings from destruction. By the 1980's Madison could publicly boast that for its size it had the finest collection of nineteenth-century archiecture in the region, encompassing Federal, Classic Revival, Gothic Revival, Italianate, French Second Empire, and Queen Anne-Eastlake. Over 300 photographs cover the wide range of commercial buildings and private houses.

Emma was many things but she was never a wallflower. Breaking away from the grip of her alcoholic husband, Emma forged a life for herself that included being one of Indiana's earliest pioneering women newspaper editors, a prohibitionist, a woman's rights champion, and an evangelist. She managed to survive two more marriages, the death of her son, and several love affairs, all the time focusing on women's welfare. She was one of America's most influential people during her lifetime, but her life and works have been overlooked until now.
