This is an autobiography of the former President of St. Mary's College. Born Mary Evaline Wolff, in 1887, the author discusses her grandparent's migration from Germany to New York and then to Milwaukee, the courting of her parents, her father's harness making shop, where she met Chippewa Indians who brought him buckskins. She progresses through her early years in school and family, with fond memories of her childhood and early attempts at poetry. ((She won the National Poetry Center Award in 1948). She explains how she chose to attend St. Mary's College in Notre Dame, Indiana and how it helped her to focus on her future role as a nun, a teacher and a future college president.

Sister Mary Immaculate attended St. Mary's College as a student in the class of 1930, entered the novitiate of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross before taking a degree and a few years later received a B. A. in English from St. Mary's. With only a few interruptions she taught at St. Mary's for more than thirty years. This book covers the early history of the Holy Cross Order in France, the move to Bertrand, Michigan, and then to Notre Dame, Indiana, and the slow growth into a major college. Discusses the transition into the turbulent 1960's and 1970's, the change in the college's publications, the first Priest-President of the college, and much more.

Many of the stories are heart-warming and truly touching. Anyone who has visited the Grotto understands its overpowering beauty and the peace which it gives.
